Gaming: After the ban on PUBG, Indians are playing UK, Korea and Hong Kong games, indigenous apps on top in making short videos

After 18 months of shutting down the Chinese app by the Indian government, changes are now visible in the field of indigenous mobile apps.  Today, the activity of indigenous app makers is increasing rapidly in the country.  On the other hand, there is also a decrease in the share of Chinese apps in the Indian markets.  While Chinese apps have been replaced by gaming apps from other countries including Britain, South Korea and Hong Kong.

The Modi government had banned 59 apps of China including Tiktok, WeChat in March 2020 amid tension on the border.  Whereas in January 2021, the central government has permanently banned many apps.  According to the China Internet Report 2021 released by the South China Morning Post, the share of Chinese apps in India’s markets is seeing a significant decline.  In the year 2018, 44 percent was occupied by Chinese apps, which has come down to just 29 percent in the year 2020.  This report testifies to the increasing share of Indian apps in various stores including Google Playstore.

China had 50 percent stake in India before the ban

According to App Annie’s data, till a month before the ban of Chinese apps in India, 50 percent of the top 10 companies in the country were from China.  In this, 20 percent was owned by indigenous companies.  In which the Arogya Setu app was at the top.  After the decision of the central government to ban, the ranking of Indian app maker companies increased rapidly in the market.  As of September, 60 per cent of the top 10 apps in App Annie are dominated by Indian manufacturers.

Many indigenous apps came forward

There was a time dominated by apps like Tiktok in the country.  This app also gave a tough competition to Facebook in the matter of short videos.  Tiktok had 119 million subscribers in a very short time.  According to the latest September data, 60 percent of the top 10 apps for making short videos today are from Indian companies.  These include MX Takatak, Mauj, Sharechat, Josh and Public etc.  Most of these apps started making short videos in June last year after the ban on Tiktok.

Chinese gaming app PUBG had made a place in almost every house of the country.  It was once played by 34 million Indians daily and it was downloaded more than 175 million times.  According to App Annie, Ludo King, a game created by only one Mumbai based company, tops the top 10 gaming apps.  Wherein Chinese apps have been replaced by gaming apps from other countries including Britain, South Korea and Hong Kong.  As of August this year, Indian game makers accounted for four per cent of the Google Play Store’s global gaming apps (19,323), according to 42 Matters, a global agency that tracks mobile app business statistics.  But earning from them is no less than a challenge because only two percent of the apps charge a fee, while on an average four apps around the world charge an app fee.
